ROME, March 31 (Reuters) - Italian EU-harmonised consumer prices (HICP) rose 1.6% month-on-month in March and the annual inflation rate accelerated to 2.1% from 1.7% the month before, preliminary figures showed on Monday.
A Reuters survey of 13 analysts had pointed to a 1.4% month-on-month increase and baotayninh.vn a 2.0% year-on-year rise. Official statistics agency ISTAT also reported that the main domestic price index (NIC), was up 0.4% on the month and up 2.0% annually in March, following a 1.6% annual rate the previous month.

Core inflation (net of fresh food and energy) was running at 1.9% year-on-year on the HICP index in March, up from 1.8% in February. The sharp month-on-month rise in the HICP index in March was mainly due to the price rebound after new-year discount sales for clothes and footwear.
The NIC index excludes prices affected by temporary discounts.
